A limit switch is a piece of electromechanical equipment that starts by using mechanical parts in the presence of a substance or object. Micro-switches are used for limit control, mode control, status display, part counting and more. Limit switches In industrial settings, it is usually possible to detect the presence and proximity or absence of a substance or object. Limit switches that are made in small dimensions are also called microswitches.
Limit switches were first used to define the motion limit of an object, hence the name "limit switch".
How limit switches work
As you can see in the figure, when an object comes in contact with the actuator, the limit switch contacts to disconnect or reconnect the electrical circuit.
Types of limit switch applications
Limit switches have a variety of applications due to their strength, ease of installation, and reliable operation in a variety of environments, such as cutting machines, conveyors, automatic lathes, cranes, and forklifts, and generally in most machines where dimensional motion control is required. The limit switches are mainly used with a control relay, a contactor or as input to a PLC.
